Night Train to the Beach

The backtracking continues…I am headed back to Barcelona, a city I feel very comfortable in. I know my way around and I need a day or two in a place like this, to figure out my next move…what better place than the beach? Yes, it will be crowded and hot but I’m up for 48 hours of it. I’ll travel by night train from Madrid this evening, get to Barcelona about 8 am, check into a fairly new hostel near Las Ramblas, then take in some sun and plan my next move…I might head to Girona for a day, possibly make a daytime stop in Nice or Monaco, then push on to Italia…I will probably take advantage of the train pass and use another night train or two along the way, it saves time (less planning on trying to find accommodations) and saves money too.

your blog is great, very helpful. my sister and i are planning a trip to europe, leaving early august. we’re planning our trip as we speak and are wondering what suggestions you might have for italia. we’re budget travellers, have heard a lot of negative things about venice but want to visit anyways. where should we stay? our goal is to be able to settle in a spot and take day trips. is this realistic for venice? any places we absolutely shouldn’t miss? also, are we missing out big if we skip berlin? we’re in europe for 6 weeks and hope to spend the bulk of our trip in italy and greece. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Hi Missy, thanks for your email…

Venice is not a hot spot for the budget traveler, but since you are traveling with another person, spliting the cost on doubles in pensions should be reasonable. But book now!! I stayed with family in Venice so I do not have a recommendation, but check out this site to begin searching:

A few day trips I did from Venice were: Trieste, Chiogga, and Asolo. But others are doable as well, look at the Riviera de Brenta area I wrote about earlier too:

Other ideas are Verona, Cortina, and even Milan.

As far as Berlin, it is a fantastic place, but I sya focus on Italy and Greece for six weeks…immerse yourself in these two Mediterranean climates and leave Germany for another trip…maybe Oktoberfest another year.
