I just got back from a 2-week trip to Greece, Turkey, Italy and Croatia. I was honest when people asked me where I was from and said America. I had no problems at all. No snide comments, nothing. I was really worried, but it was fine.

I always discuss politics.
People *love* to talk politics and so do I.
I have done it everywhere; the most memorable would have been in Kurdistan. The Portenos in Buenos Aires loved talking politics also.

They really do want to hear what other people think, how their nation is perceived, etc.

In my experience, I have noticed that the tendency for Americans to be blunt and 'up-front' about politics is appreciated.

Of course, they also like me because I tell them that Bush is a war criminal. ;^)
