Take a guidebook!

It has all sorts of handy info in it. Just don’t use it for food or lodging ideas.
Don’t be a sheep.

On the other hand, some of the Hostels of Europe (as opposed to HI) places are great.

That’s my take as well – I’m thinking of nixing guidebooks for this though, just to get all my tips and info straight from travelers – give a bit more of a “straight from the source” feel, you know?

I’m not a huge fan of guidebooks (too heavy!) but sometimes they have important info all gathered together in one place. I say take one, but don’t read it religiously.
Sometimes they have little tidbits that are extremely helpful.

I agree. You can get bogged down and loaded heavy. You’re the reporter here, so write about what you see, hear, feel, taste and think.
