To guidebook or not to guidebook?

The other night my friend Taylor was telling me that there was some lonely planet book that I had to get for my trip.

"At night in the hostel, you hang out in the dorm and it seemed like everyone was breaking out their book, comparing notes and giving each other tips. You've got to have one."

Now, for the most part I agree. LP does awesome stuff, and I've thought about whether or no I should have one. However, something I ponder with this trip is going "guidebookless".

Why? Well, it ties back more to me doing this trip for/through BootsnAll. There's a question I want to answer: What do I need a guidebook for, when I have the BootsnAll Community? Between the boards and the articles and the insiders, do I need a guidebook?

Hmmm....

I agree. You can get bogged down and loaded heavy. You're the reporter here, so write about what you see, hear, feel, taste and think.

I'm not a huge fan of guidebooks (too heavy!) but sometimes they have important info all gathered together in one place. I say take one, but don't read it religiously.
Sometimes they have little tidbits that are extremely helpful.

That's my take as well - I'm thinking of nixing guidebooks for this though, just to get all my tips and info straight from travelers - give a bit more of a "straight from the source" feel, you know?

Take a guidebook!

It has all sorts of handy info in it. Just don't use it for food or lodging ideas.
Don't be a sheep.

On the other hand, some of the Hostels of Europe (as opposed to HI) places are great.
