4. Where to go in Western Europe: Scandinavia: Sweden, Finland & back to Germany

Whatever I wind up doing in Norway, I'm thinking of heading east to Sweden and then traveling south along the western coast.

That would get me to Malmo, just up from Sweden's southern tip; and from there I could also jaunt back to over to Denmark for Copenhagen.

Back into Sweden, I’d cut through the interior—what’s the landscape like, the towns?—to Stockholm. Then a ferry to Turku, Finland, where I will not be seeing Carita since she decided to stuff off to California (just had to rub that in, dearie). She is, however, giving me loads of tips for things to do in Finland Finland Finland, the country where I want to be.

I’m not sure how extensive my time in Finland will be—wait, that’s the case for everything on this trip so far! Ultimately I’ll wind up in Helsinki, where I’ll ferry down to Warnemunde, Germany, and the mainland madness begins all over again, and for the next few months.

from Malmo to Copenhagen you can take the very convenient train which takes about 20 mins. Malmo is nice but Copenhagen is magnificent – but expensive.

From Sweden there should be lots of ferries to Finland – but you cant miss out Lapland can you (Max will want you to drop off his letter to Father Christmas whilst you are there). Helsinki is a great place – check out the tractor bar – and from there you can head east to St Petersburg or South across the gulf to the fairy tale kingdom of Estonia – Tallin is the nicest place I have been to for ages. From there train it through the Baltics and then down into Poland – arriving at Krakow. From there its a short hop, skip and a jump down to Munich. Then, if you sober up, head down to Prague, Vienna, Budapest and the Balkans…..

Thinking of a 2 week whirlwind tour of Scandinavia via rail from Hamburg to Copenhagen and Stockholm.

I am open to other places on the MUST SEE list, but will have to limit myself to 5 travel days. Any experienced suggestions?

(Help, I leave next week!!).

Thanks!
