Itinerary: Where in the bloody Europe am I going?

The plan is that at some point in August I leave for Europe. I'll fly out of Portland, Oregon. That's about all I'm sure of!

Well, no, I take that back. Odds are we'll plunk me down in London, and I'll stay there for a few days. Fitting - the last time I went abroad (August 1999, 4 years ago once I leave) I started my trip with a few days in London then, too.

London's a great starting point anyway; the whole of Europe and the UK are accessible from there. Fly to Dublin? Sorted. Train north to Scotland (which admittedly is one of my first impulses, because Edinburgh is a second home to me) - no worries. Train or plane to the mainland? Easy.

Plan so far though, is for me to spend a few weeks moseying around Britain. Take the train through England and Wales, then up to Scotland for a while, then probably back to London. Where from there though? Here's a rough list of all the countries I'll be going to:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Bulgaria
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • F.Y.R.O.M.
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Holland
  • Hungary
  • Italy
  • Luxembourg
  • Montenegro
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Republic of Ireland
  • Serbia
  • Slovakia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • Turkey
  • Yugoslavia

Makes my mouth water. Now to figure out how long where, and in what order for all these different places.

    Hey Ant,
Just checked out your itinerary and found you're not going to Morocco. I went InterRailing for the first time last summer, from Norway to Morocco, and it was fantastic. But one of the most eye-opening and refreshing things was experiencing the contrast between Western Europe and Morocco. I would recommend anybody and everybody go there, to Marrakesh in particular, to really see how different it is to Spain, less than 15 miles away (from Tangier, at least).

What's more, you can get there on an InterRail pass, with a 50% discount on the ferry fare. The pass is valid just like in every other European country, so make the most of it. It's such a shame that so many travellers completely ignore the option of Morocco, and don't even consider it. Go forth, and show everyone what they're missing!

Come on, spend your money for a small RV, and live it up. You won't see the half of what can be seen when traveling in a RV.

Just in case your have forgotten, "During nine trips (from 1970 to 1995) we visited Europe for 968 days, and spent at least one night in 452 different places in 383 cities in 32 countries. We drove 87,000 miles, crossed international borders 227 times, and spent 605 nights in 406 different places in 25 countries, in our Recreational Vehicle."

RV is the only way, you won't see much, or meet the "real" people if you are on a train.

Give it a try. We have spent the night in 406 different places in the RV, so if you have a question, just ask.

    Jim,

Thanks mate. I probably will be going through your books as I piece together my itinerary and map out things I'll be doing. I'll email you if I have questions.

    Stephen,

You know, crazy as this might sound (especially considering all the Morocco stories I've edited for the site), I hadn't really thought about it.

It's definitely worth it though - and thanks for the recommendation!

You should visit the maltese islands (malta, gozo and comino), they are just wonderful, sandy beaches, lots of history and sight seeing.
